Mihály Dresch and Miklós Lukács in D.C.

Hungarian musicians Mihály Dresch, saxophone and Miklós Lukác, cimbalom made a rare appearance in Washington D.C. yesterday at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. I had to miss the afternoon’s outdoor offering in the festival tent, but stopped by after work to catch their evening performance in front of a small audience in the Baird Auditorium of the Museum of Natural History. Here is the encore from their concert:

Nordic Jazz Festival 2013

This summer brought the 7th annual Nordic Jazz Festival to Washington DC. Most concerts took place at Twins Jazz on U St, featuring bands from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland. As usual, there was a showcase concert with four of the groups at the House of Sweden, as well as a night at the Finnish Embassy.

These were some of the highlights:

Saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen with Alexi Tuomarila, piano; Juri Huhtala, bass; Jussi Lehtonen, drums at the Finnish Embassy in Washington DC, June 27, 2013.

Lina Nyberg and trio w/David Stackenäs, guitar; Josef Kallerdahl, bass; and Peter Danemo, drums at the House of Sweden in Washington DC, June 26, 2013.

Guitarist Ómar Guðjónsson soloing with bassist Tómas R. Einarsson’s trio at the House of Sweden, June 26, 2013.

I also shot a bit of Christian Wallumrød’s performance at Twins Jazz. The performance was beautiful, unfortunately the video was not. Here’s one shot I managed in low light.
